Evan Penny, known internationally for his hyperrealist sculptures, here presents the first solo show in Toronto of his photographic works. Penny’s photography straddles the line between documentation and fictive scene. They are photographs of his sculptures, which in turn are 3- D meditations on photography.
Penny’s No One - In Particular series undermines the factual ground of the photographic portrait, presenting believable images of entirely fictitious individuals. Each figure is a sheer act of invention, rooted in no real encounter or particular referent. The work contradicts the primacy of photography’s role in telling the truth, and points to this implicit uncertainty in all representations of the real.
Evan Penny is represented by Trépanier Baer Gallery in Calgary and Sperone Westwater in New York.
