Spiral Jetty

In conjunction with the exhibition Surveillance States by Trevor Paglen, Prefix Institute of Contemporary Art is proud to present a rare screening of Spiral Jetty (1970, 34 min 53 sec) by Robert Smithson, a film that the influential land artist considered equivalent to his earthwork of the same name.

Admission consists of a suggested donation of $5 at the door. The exhibition, which will be closed for the duration of the screening, will reopen at 3pm.

Years before Trevor Paglen flew over the Government Communication Headquarters in South West England in order to shoot his video Circles (2015), Robert Smithson made a similar flight over Rozel Point in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, for his film version of Spiral Jetty (1970). In both works, the camera circumnavigates its circular subject, zooming in and out on the structure below. The formal similarities between these two works lead us to reflect on the great changes that have taken place in the world in the last fifty years by looking at representative structures of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries from all angles.
