DMG: Artist Talk by Esmond Lee
In this public, outdoor talk, Scarborough photographer Esmond Lee will speak about his outdoor installation Gods Among Us at Malvern Town Centre. He will address the inspiration for the work, the significance of its location at the mall, and how the work speaks to and about the immigrant experience in Scarborough.
Gods Among Us features a series of large-scale photographs of places of worship in Scarborough, installed on the green arched structure just outside of the mall. Many of spaces Lee documents are in provisional sites – tucked into industrial areas, located beside fast food restaurants, or repurposed from other churches, stores, even a motel. This work reflects upon suburban architecture, and on the communities (spiritual, social and economic) found and created through places of worship, particularly for immigrants in Scarborough.
This program will take place outside of the main entrance to Malvern Town Centre, beside the installation, and will be held rain or shine. Masks are required, and physical distancing will be in place. Free, all are welcome, registration is required.
