Artist Liza Nguyen engages in a conversation with
Roth about Souvenirs of Vietnam, a feature
CONTACT 2007. Nguyen’s exhibition includes images
taken in Vietnam in 2004, the 30th anniversary of
the fall of
Saigon. Her series Surface features pictures of
collected from historic sites of battle.
Names such as Hanoi, Saigon and My Lai evoke vivid
horrific events, the ground a metaphor for a
French-born of Vietnamese descent, Nguyen will
personal journey to her family’s homeland and the
inspired the work.
Dr. Robin Roth is a professor of geography at York
with a special interest in Vietnam.
