“By Cowardice or Courage” is a linked series of
colour photographs that excavates one woman’s
intimate memories of her childhood as well as her
continuing concerns over such issues as tradition,
isolation, sexuality, domesticity, and fear. By
placing objects from her own past within domestic
spaces, Sarah Mangialardo has created an open -
ended narrative that seeks to illuminate issues of
personal relevance that face many women in our
culture today. This body of work is a call to
women to continue discussing the seditious and
immutable issues of their past, whilst making
steps to create new possibilities for their future.
