Fragments: Portraits of Survivors

Jason Schwartz

Commissioned in 2001 by the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg, Schwartz photographed over 100 survivors, culminating in a major exhibit during the 9/11 period. Never exhibited in Toronto, the 22 large-format black and white portraits capture the lives, faces and stories of Holocaust survivors from southwest Florida. A sliver of time is encapsulated in each photograph and a short, personal handwritten statement of triumph and candor accompanies each image. “I beat Hitler”.
