This workshop will teach participants a simple way to bind a personalized artist/photo book! The binding of pages defines a book, as much as its content. This workshop is an introduction to the materials, tools and techniques used in basic bookbinding structures. Participants investigate different characteristics and how to manipulate binder’s board, handmade and machine-made papers, as well as the proper use of bone folders, adhesives and cutting tools to create an album.* At the end of two sessions, you will walk away with your own beautifully handmade artist/photo book.
Note: Most materials including paper for the pages and board, and the bookbinding tools will be provided. Participants are to provide their own covering material (paper, fabric, artwork, etc.) Please contact soJin, Education Coordinator for details – firstname.lastname@example.org
Marie-Noëlle Chatelain’s BioAfter majoring in painting and art history with a minor in bookbinding at l’École des Arts Appliqués in Paris, Marie-Noëlle went to Germany to study etching at the HBBK in Kassel. Although she never formally studied photography, Marie-Noëlle has been taking pictures for more than thirty years. Her early approach to photography was as a means of documentation, but later this approach evolved into a more abstract adaptation of the media and the images themselves; she combined pictures employing techniques of mixed media, including watercolour, drawing, double printing and non-silver processes. Most recently, her images and continuing interest in a whole spectrum of printing processes find their expression in, and are an integral part of, handmade books.
