Eli Reed was born in the US and studied pictorial illustration at the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts. Reed's special reports include a long-term study on Beirut (1983-87), which resulted in his first, highly acclaimed book Beirut, City of Regrets. Most notably, Reed has documented the African-American experience over more than 20 years, published in Black in America (1997). He joined Magnum Photos in 1982 and lives in Austin, Texas.
David Alan Harvey was raised in Virginia and lives in New York City. When he was 20 he lived with and documented a family in Norfolk, Virginia resulting in the publication, Tell It Like It Is (1966). Harvey has published three major books – Cuba (1999), Divided Soul (2003) and Living Proof (2007). He has exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. He joined Magnum as a nominee in 1993 and became a full member in 1997.
