Confluence II

Tina Berning, Michelangelo Di Battista

A collaboration between fashion photographer Michelangelo Di Battista and illustration artist Tina Berning, Confluence II merges photography, illustration, painting, and collage to highlight the multifaceted nature of female beauty. Given a single photographic image and one attempt to reinvent it, Berning manipulates Di Battista’s duotone prints by scratching their surfaces, adding layers of paint, or cutting them to pieces. The two artists create an interdisciplinary dialogue that subtly disrupts the visual codes of fashion, portraiture, and the female figure. Where the image of conventional female beauty is typically polished in postproduction for high fashion publications, Berning applies her own analogue retouching to these images of women in ways that transform, highlight, or reimagine their physical properties in order to question the certainties of aesthetics and beauty.

In a photographic career spanning over 20 years, Di Battista has worked with the biggest names in the fashion industry and published his photographs in many prestigious magazines and journals. Berning is a Berlin-based artist and illustrator whose award-winning work has been published and exhibited extensively and is featured in numerous anthologies. The two met during a Vogue fashion shoot in 2007 and have since collaborated in three solo exhibitions.
