Sando’s work responds to visual artifacts discovered while she photographs storefronts and window displays. Specifically, she looks for representations of change in cultural attitudes around gender, tourism, and the natural sciences. In Nightshades, Sando references the solanacea family of ornamental and medicinal plants, and the shades of hosiery.
Working from a database of scans she made of the offset-printed packaging for hosiery, Sando has inverted original colours and removed portions of textual information through a variety of analogue and digital processes. In doing so, many of the ideologies that underpin these commercial impressions are revealed.
