Touched by a Soucouyant
Video, 7:37 min, 2015
In this video by Trinidadian-born, Toronto-based artist Natalie Wood, the artist explores a Caribbean myth, in which a woman transforms herself into a ball of fire at night and sucks the blood of her victims. This video (brilliantly filmed on the artist’s and actor’s mobile phones) depicts a late-night encounter with a soucouyant. In this piece, the taboo of forbidden love is readdressed as a celebratory event. This is one of the artist’s works that will be presented in Performing Change at John B. Aird Gallery and Charles Street Video.
